A surprisingly old church, fits well into my archeology rounds. There was once a fort on the hill of the church hill of Höflein. Today's cemetery wall, in which one finds Roman stone material, follows the course of the Roman wall surrounding the fort. The fortified church of St. Ulrich was later built here.

The parish has probably existed since 1381, but no information is available about it. It was originally a branch church of Petronell and became an independent parish around 1544. Around this time, the patronage of the Höfleiner Church passed from the Abbots of Göttweig to the rule of Petronell. Until 1968 Höflein remained a patronage parish of the Counts of Abensperg and Traun, the former owners of the estate.

Both the church and the cemetery wall are made of many Roman materials. There are no records of the construction of the church, but the beginnings of church construction can still be seen in the Romanesque masonry of the presbytery. The Gothic defensive tower with its octagonal tower and pyramid helmet was destroyed by fire in 1945 and rebuilt by the community in 1947/48 according to old plans. At the same time four bells were purchased. The tracery windows are of early Gothic origin.
