The peace bell in Frankfurt (Oder) is a monument for the Oder-Neisse border, which was then known as the Oder-Neisse border. The GDR had already accepted the Oder-Neisse border with the Görlitz Agreement in 1949. Frankfurt (Oder) became a border town and the eastern districts became Polish as Słubice. Traditionally, the bell is rung on September 1st on World Day of Peace.

The peace bell is a three-ton cast iron bell that was cast in Morgenröthe in the Vogtland. [1] The bell rings in C sharp. It bears the inscription peace and friendship with all peoples. The bell was named VI by the CDU of the GDR. Party congress founded on January 27, 1953. [2] For this reason, permission must be obtained from the Frankfurt district group of the CDU if the bell is to be rung on certain occasions. [3]

Until 2011, the bell hung in a bell house designed by Johannes Müller on Holzmarkt (♁52 ° 20 ′ 38.5 ″ N, 14 ° 33 ′ 28.2 ″ E). [4]

In 2002 it was decided to move the bell to the southern end of the wood market. In 2011 a new bell tower was built by the architects Gruber + Popp. The bell was removed from the bell house on February 2, 2011 and then renovated in Neuenhagen near Berlin. [5] The total cost of the renovation and the new bell tower amounted to around 250,000 euros. [6] A stone slab with a dedication from the inside of the old bell house was attached next to the new bell suspension. [7] On August 30, 2011, the new location of the Peace Bell on the Oder promenade (♁52 ° 20 ′ 42.7 ″ N, 14 ° 33 ′ 26.7 ″ E) was inaugurated. The bell is now framed and held by a stainless steel tower. [8]
