The meadow floor of the valley is covered by heaped earth. It is an overburden dump that was created by the Juno shaft.
Juno shaft was built in 1847 as a joint project between the Fortuna and Jupiter collieries. In order to create a sufficiently large colliery site, the course of the Muttenbach was moved to the opposite edge of the valley.
The shaft was initially only 20 meters deep. Two miners pulled the coal from the depths with a hand reel. The pit water could flow through a branch line of the St. Johannes Erbstollen to the Ruhr.
In 1856 the shaft was enlarged and a horse peg was built. From then on, the coal was extracted with 1 HP. The Göpel was one of the last in the area.
In 1884 operations at the Juno shaft were finally closed.
