"Pilgrims and traders on the move in the Sauerland region of Brandenburg:
The current church, a completely new building from around 1390 and after 1415, is certainly to be seen in connection with the city's founding in 1396. It is the only high Gothic basilica in Westphalia. It was dedicated to the patron saint of pilgrimages: St. James. The relatively comfortable mountain road that led from Dortmund via Breckerfeld to Cologne and Frankfurt was known not only to merchants, but also to pilgrims on the Way of St. James. The Church of St. James and its hospice served mainly local pilgrims who only walked a section of the route as representatives of the great pilgrimage to Santiago.

A rood screen once separated a small clerical community of vicars in the choir - called the St. Mary's, St. Andrew's and St. Nicholas's vicarages - from the lay congregation in the transept and nave. The three keystones of the transept vaults point to the three altars set up here: in the middle in front of the rood screen is the altar of St. James, the patron saint of the Pilgrims, which the Breckerfeld steelsmiths' guild had also chosen for protection; a Mary and a Nicholas altar stood in front of the east walls of the side aisles in a row with the James altar. The transept was therefore the meeting place for the pilgrims, who could hold their mass at the altars, and could thus be described as the actual James pilgrimage church. This is underlined by the fact that in 1757 pilgrim shells still framed the keystones or were attached to a chain of candlesticks.

The canons probably had another meeting room above the sacristy, where there was once a room with a wide opening to the choir. In addition to "serving" the altars, their job was also to look after the pilgrims. "
