The Erlach settlement lies between the deer pond and the Hornauer Weiher. The second of the three Altmühl springs is located a little east of it, on the site of a secluded homestead.

There is probably no one Altmühlquelle, because it has three official sources. One should actually speak of an "Altmühl spring area". The area lies in the Frankenhöhe between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Burgbernheim. There have always been disagreements as to which of the sources is the "official" Altmühlquelle.
The spring at the Erlach settlement has the highest water output (although it is still called Erlachbach here) and flows into the Hornauer Weiher. That is why it is often referred to as the actual origin of the Altmühl. Officially, however, this has been seen differently since 1904 (see Hornauer Weiher).

The Altmühl spring rises at a farm between the deer pond and the Hornauer pond in the community Windelsbach. Because of the different sources, the length of the Altmühl is specified differently. Officially, it is 225 km long and thus the longest purely inner Bavarian river.
