Split [ʃplit] (Croatian Split, Italian Spalato, originated from Greek ἀσπάλαθος, aspálathos) is the second largest city in Croatia. It is the largest city in southern Croatia and is therefore popularly known as the “capital of Dalmatia” without this status ever having been officially granted. The city is the administrative seat of the Split-Dalmatia County (Croatian Splitsko-dalmatinska županija), which includes the central part of Dalmatia. Split had about 167,000 inhabitants in 2011. [2]

Split is an important port city and the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Split-Makarska. There is also a university in Split. The origins of the city can be traced back to Diocletian's Palace. The city center of Split including the Diocletian's Palace was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.

The world heritage city of Split seemed like a mixture of Hamburg and Munich in the summer. Beautiful old buildings, history and the harbor in the nose. Many people populated the streets in the evening. There are expensive and cheap shopping, nice restaurants and small bars.
