The column is located in the middle of Cours Saint Pierre where you can rest in the shade of the trees. From the column square by the rue Maréchal Joffre which is lively with bars and restaurants.

The Louis XVI column is a monument of the city of Nantes in France, located in the center of the Place Maréchal-Foch. It is a column 28 meters high, placed on a pedestal, surmounted by a statue of the King of France Louis XVI, represented as Roman emperor. He holds in one hand the staff of command, and in the other his will, in the form of a roll. The pedestal is formed of a Doric column on cubic base with a diameter of 6 feet (about 2 meters) and height of 86 feet (about 28 meters). The whole is started in 1788 of white stone. In 1792, following the evolution of the political situation, the project of statue of the king is abandoned in favor of that of a statue of Liberty. Louis XVI, born August 23, 1754 in Versailles and guillotined death January 21, 1793 in Paris, is the last king of France of the period known as the Ancien Régime. He was king of France and Navarre from 1774 to 1789 and king of the French from 1789 to 1792. He is also the last monarch to have lived in the castle of Versailles.

For the visit of Napoleon to Nantes in 1808, an imperial eagle is hoisted to the top of the column. Finally, the statue of Louis XVI is inaugurated on August 14, 1823.

The statue of Louis XVI is made of a friable stone, and is degraded. The statue loses its head and is redone identically (no one knows what has become of the original). This replica, work of the Nantes sculptor Georges Perraud, is installed in 1926. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonne_Louis-XVI
