Walking time: approx. 1.25 hours.

Refreshments: Sonnsteinhütte of the Traunkirchen mountain rescue service (open daily from Easter to the end of October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from the start of the holidays in July and August. Tel. No. 0664/3698389)

A really fantastic photo spot, especially at sunrise. A short and crisp climb that can be completed in an hour.
Towards sunset, the Traunstein is beautifully illuminated and invites you to have a little snack at the summit.

A short and crisp ascent that can be done in just over an hour. You are rewarded for the sweaty ascent with a wonderful view over the Traunsee and the opportunity to stop at the Sonnsteinhütte.
Especially at sunset there is not much going on and the view, when the Traunstein is illuminated in the evening light, is just GIGANTIC !!!

A nicer alternative for me is the big (Ebensee) Sonnstein. Ascent begins directly at the church in Ebensee. Is no more demanding than the small Sonnstein, but less slippery when wet. And, if you want, you can also use one of the two connecting paths to the small Sonnstein - the high path over the transmitter, however, contains dangerous spots.

A climb to this small mountain on Lake Traunsee will definitely be rewarded with an absolutely beautiful view. However, you should be sure-footed here, as there are some rocky passages that you have to climb up and down.
But it's definitely doable.
