The Brandenburg Cathedral is the mother church of the state of Brandenburg.
In 948 Otto the Great founded the diocese of Brandenburg in the middle of a wetland populated by Slavic tribes.

The diocese was lost again through a Slav uprising, but was rebuilt in the 12th century after the last Slav prince Pribislaw Heinrich was baptized and Premonstratensian settled in the present old town. After the death of Pribislaw, the Ascanians became margraves of Brandenburg and the bishop moved to the Margrave on the castle island. Start of construction of the cathedral was 1165, since then, the building, not least due to static problems, has been repeatedly redesigned and restored.

Thus, there are many traces of past architectural attitudes and liturgical uses that make the cathedral a unique example of the history of culture and piety in this area. The Domstift exists as a Protestant monastery to this day and operates the preservation of the cathedral ensemble and the care of the traditional art goods. The Cathedral Museum displays altars and sculptures, documents, liturgical equipment and parts of the textile treasury, including the important starvation towel from the late 13th century.

King Otto I founded the diocese of Brandenburg here in 948. With the laying of the foundation stone in 1165, the construction of today's cathedral began. The Gothic reconstruction, which still characterizes the appearance of the church today, was completed around the middle of the 15th century.
