All water flows from here to the North Sea. It feeds three rivers that shape our landscapes via three different routes: the Elbe to its mouth near Hamburg, the Weser to Bremerhaven, and the Rhine with one of its estuaries near Hook of Holland. As a triple watershed, this point is unique in Germany.

The Dreistromstein is a three-sided obelisk that has marked the watershed point of the Weser, Elbe and Rhine in the Thuringian Forest since 1906. The cone-shaped, walled-up foot of the obelisk was made of the rock that is typical for the respective river system: Elbe: granite; Weser: Grauwacke; Rhine: quartz. The inscriptions on the obelisk also contain the names of the rivers that flow into the three rivers: Rambach, Schwarza, Saale, Elbe, Grümpen, Itz, Main, Rhine, Werra, Weser.
Opposite it is the Kleine Dreiherrenstein (also: Dreiherrenstein am Saarzipfel) from 1733, which marks the border of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen, the Duchy of Saxony-Hildburghausen and the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. It is one of the original 13 three-man stones along the Rennsteig.

Das hier am Saar besonders reichlich fallende Niederschlagswasser fließt – einmalig in Deutschland – sogleich drei verschiedenen Strömen zu: Der Elbe, dem Main und dem Rhein.

Auf engbegrenztem Gebiet entspringen nämlich im Schatten des Hochwalds drei Wildbäche, einer kaum 500 m vom andern, der Rambach, der nach Norden zur Schwarza in den Elbebereich hinabrinnt, die Grümpen, ein Nebenbach der zum Main hinstrebenden Itz, und das Türkengründlein, welches nach seiner Vereinigung mit dem Mutzgründlein die Saar bildet und als erster bedeutenderer Zufluss die junge Werra (Weser) verstärkt.

Einbeziehung ihres Gebiets, so musste die Anlage statt auf dem Saar gleich daneben, auf dem meiningischen Forstort Rattelsberg, errichtet werden.

Das Denkmal besteht aus einer dreiseitigen Sandsteinpyramide, die sich aus einem massiven Untergrund von rundlicher Form erhebt, gebildet aus typischen Gesteinen der jeweiligen Stromgebiete (Elbe: Granit, Rhein: Quarz, Weser: Grauwacke). Auf den Seitenflächen der Pyramide sind die Namen der oben erwähnten Bächlein nebst denen der sie aufnehmenden größeren Gewässer eingraviert. Darunter die Namen der Staaten, deren Grenzen und Hoheitsgebiete sich ehemals an diesem Punkte berührten: Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Sachsen-Meiningen-Coburg (als Nachfolger der reichsunmittelbaren Herrschaft Schaumberg) und Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Die Einweihungsfeier begann am 7. Juni 1906 früh um 08:00 Uhr. Aus Limbach kamen die Mitglieder des Rennsteigvereins, dort hatte gerade ihre Jahreshauptversammlung stattgefunden. Fürsteher Ludwig Hertel erteilte zunächst Herrn Kümpel das Wort, nach dessen Rede wurde die Stiftungsurkunde verlesen. Ihr Wortlaut war folgender:

"Gemein derer Renner uf dem Waldhûz.

The Werra-Burgen-Steig with the sign X5 is a 500 km long long-distance hiking trail. [1] It begins in Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony and runs along the Werra river through northeast Hesse and western Thuringia to Masserberg. The 128-kilometer section from Hann. Münden to Nentershausen with the special sign "X5 H" is certified as a quality hiking trail. [2]

As early as 1885, the hiking fans of the Werra Valley Association laid the oldest section from the Wartburg in Eisenach to Hann. Münden. Divided by the inner-German border, further routes were laid out and united after the fall of the Wall. The Werra-Burgen-Steig was extended to the sources of the Werra in 2011.

In the "Goldland" of the Schaumberger Land, the Franconian Way is one of the most characteristic hiking routes and also one of the most scenic.
Very close to the famous Rennsteig, the Franconian Way leads us on paths through dense forests.
At Neundorf the view of the foreland with its small valleys widens.
With a length of 14 km and a total walking time of around 5 hours, this hike is well suited for a day trip.
There are 500 meters of altitude to conquer, whereby we mainly walk on forest and grass floors.
Many signs and pictograms show us the way.
Geological peculiarities are on our way on this hike as well as species-rich flora and beautiful viewpoints over Franconia and the Rhön.

If you walk on the Rennsteig from Limbach in the direction of Dreistromstein, the Rennsteig crosses the road from Siegmundsburg to Friedrichshöhe approx. 500m after the Dreistromstein. Three soldiers' graves can be seen directly on this street.
