At the back of the Caffe Bar LOVRE are the remains of an 11th-century church. At the top of the columns are griffins. The columns date back to Roman times.
Enter the building and through the bar and at the end you will discover the hidden remains of the church.

Zadar, located on a narrow headland on the Adriatic Sea and the Zadar Channel, is separated from the mainland by a moat. Zadar was a fortress until 1873. The city has a large port, four gates (including the naval gate with an inserted part of a Roman triumphal arch and the Porta di Terraferma built according to the design of Sanmicheli). Most of the old town of Zadar is of the Venetian style. Among the squares are the Herrenplatz with the main guard building and the Gradska Straža (with the city library) as well as the fountain square with an ancient Corinthian column. One of these also adorns Simeonsplatz (source Wikipedia).

The beautiful city of Zadar on the Croatian coast is rich in archaeological and artistic heritage. During its eventful history, many peoples have left their mark on the historic old town and turned it into a treasure trove for architecture and science.

Zadar was already a settlement and the main trading centre of Liburnia in Illyrian times. In Roman sources it is referred to as Iader or Iadera (in German also Jadera), and in the 10th century by Konstantinos Porphyrogennetos as Diadora.

Remains of the Roman Forum
In the 2nd century BC, the Romans used the area of the Liburnians. After 59 BC, Iadera was a Roman municipium, and from 48 BC it was a colony of Roman citizens. They built a capitol, fortifications, thermal baths and an aqueduct.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Iadera became the capital of the Byzantine theme of Dalmatia.

The city was neither destroyed by the Avars nor during the conquest of the South Slavs from the 7th century onwards. However, earthquakes and the decline of urban life caused the settlement layer to rise by about one metre since Roman times. The basic structure of the city was largely preserved.

A church organization existed by the 4th century at the latest. A cathedral was built on the southeast side of the Roman Forum, as well as the Bishop's Palace and a baptistery. The pre-Romanesque rotunda of the Trinity Church dates from the 9th century, and the Church of St. Donatus from the 10th century.

The most interesting for me in Zadar are the Roman and Venetian ruins in the old town. The city gates are also a highlight for me.
