Under the rule of Albert of Austria and Isabella of Spain, the city flourished and, around 1609, a square square was created to concentrate commercial activities there. On this square you will find a number of monumental buildings, partly in the Renaissance style. The square also offers a view of the St. Walburga Church and St. Nicholas Church, which are slightly further away.

Until the end of the 16th century, on the north side, the derelict Oude Vleeshuis and Oude Landshuis were found. On the east side was the Old Town Hall, of which the so-called Spanish Pavilion is still a remnant. Important Renaissance buildings are the Town Hall of Veurne, the Landshuis with Belfry of Veurne, and the Vleeshalle.

Veurne seems to be the most peaceful town in the Westhoek. Life goes on in a friendly way on and around the Grote Markt. Only visitors sometimes dare to cause additional crowds. The lovely quiet character of the town is also reflected in a short walk, which starts at the market with a wide range of special buildings and continues along a beautiful piece of nature near the water. Often also in the middle of greenery, where you can have a quiet picnic undisturbed.

The market square of Veurne is the starting point for many walks and bike rides. This is also the ideal start for a city walk in Veurne. Wherever you look, you will see centuries-old and listed buildings including the town hall, Spanish Pavilion and the Sint Niklaas church.

But also in the middle of the large open square you will see a beautiful piece of history, namely the public pump from the middle of the 19th century. This monumental pump had to make way in 1868 due to the increasing traffic on the Grote Markt. It was then given a place at the back of the Sint-Denijsplein on the Zuidstraat. In 1908 the pump moved a second time and was then partly restored. The crank with copper handle was installed at that time. During the redevelopment of the Grote Markt in 1997, the pump was assigned its current location and with it its original location.

In the corner of the Grote Markt, during the Great War, was the HEADQUARTERS (autumn 1914) of King Albert 1 and the Military Staff of the Belgian army.

The museum is definitely worth a visit. The entrance fee is low and you will receive a lot of information in the museum about life behind the front and the important role of the city of Veurne as headquarters, crisis centre, justice system, etc.
Veurne was the centre of unoccupied Belgium during the Great War.

Take your time and start at Veurne in peacetime. The route takes you further back in time to how Veurne and its residents survived the Great War. Education, medical progress due to the advent of X-rays and their application. Admire the old X-ray table.

Many foreign dignitaries were received here. Justice was administered in this building. Read the trial of a local murderer and the verdict? View the guillotine in the courtroom. Enter the workroom of King Albert 1 and participate with Karel Cogge in an important meeting to flood the IJzervlakte.

Experience this museum, take your time. This museum is recommended if you want to know more about the daily life of ordinary citizens behind the front.
The museum has a spacious and safe cloakroom.

In the corner of the Grote Markt you can find the ‘Belevingscentrum Vrij Vaderland’ in the Stad- en Landshuis. This museum - unlike other museums - does not focus on the battlefields, but on the small last piece of free Belgium that remained at the time, the so-called 'Belgian Sector'. From here Albert I, the then King of the Belgians, managed to hold out against the German occupier.
Vrij Vaderland tells the story behind the front, the daily life in this last piece of unoccupied territory. Discover how Veurne and the surrounding area suddenly had to deal with a melting pot of people; soldiers - both from our own country and from foreign regions -, doctors, nurses, but also refugees ended up here.

The experience centre tells this story in an atmospheric scenography with both modern media and traditional exhibition techniques.

Every Wednesday, the weekly market takes place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Grote Markt. Numerous market stallholders present their wares. The range is diverse, ranging from plants and flowers, textiles, vegetables and fruit to dairy products.

On the east side stood the Old City Hall, of which the so-called Spanish Pavilion is a remnant. Important Renaissance buildings are the City Hall of Veurne, the Country House with Belfry of Veurne, and the Vleeshalle. There are also a large number of historical houses on the Grote Markt. On the north side, a homogeneous ensemble of five stepped gables in Renaissance style has been created. This facade was reconstructed in 1920. Then at number 26 is the house De Valk, from 1624, in late Gothic style. At number 9 is the house de Hoge Wacht from 1636 with a cellar that possibly dates from the 14th century.

The houses at numbers 10, 21 and 25 date from the second half of the 18th century and were built in a classicist style.

From the 20th century there are a number of houses whose design is derived from regional Renaissance architecture.
