    The Elfengrund waterfall in the southern part of the "Plesse-Konstein" nature reserve is unique to the region with some fossil limestone tufts. The very calcareous Gatterbach springs from nearby sources. Mosses are particularly responsible for the deposition of lime as tuff, especially the "variable strong nerve moss" (Cratoneurum commutatum). It grows on trickled or overflowed stones in shady and: lime-rich sections of the upper streams.

They occur in areas where the groundwater is heavily enriched with dissolved lime. The waterfall in Elfengrund is one of the largest tufa springs in Hesse. The Gatterbach, which rises from nearby springs, has over time piled up the limestone tuff on mosses and formed steps for waterfalls through the constant supply of lime deposits. Due to their porous structure, the limestone tuffs are extremely fragile and therefore endangered. It is therefore forbidden to enter, otherwise the naturally formed structure will be destroyed!
