The key to visit the tower can be found within the opening hours of the tourist information office (Mon.-Fri 10 am-6 pm, Sat. 10 am-4 pm) and on weekends in the Haus der Stadtgeschichte - Otto Rettenmaier Haus (10 am-5 pm) be lent against pledge.

Two towers still bear witness to the once mighty city wall: the idol tower, built in 1392, was the southwest cornerstone; the bulwark tower fortified the northwest corner. In 1519, Götz von Berlichingen, Württemberg magistrate in Möckmühl, spent one night in the bulwark tower as a prisoner of the Swabian League. Heilbronn's actual "Idol Tower" was given the name "Bulwark Tower" when the Swedes and the French expanded the immediate area around the tower into a strong bulwark during the Thirty Years' War. Since 1985, a silhouette-like disc man has been balancing “over the abyss” on the roof of the idol tower. The sculpture of the same name was created by the Berlin-based artist Hubertus von der Goltz.

The Bollwerk Tower was connected to the Götzen Tower by the city wall. Both towers today bear witness to the massive fortifications that were built between the 13th and 14th centuries to defend the imperial city. The city was only open through the Brückentor, Sülmer Tor and Fleiner Tor.
