            The Langenprozelten pumped storage power plant near Gemünden am Main in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart (Bavaria) was put into operation in 1976. It is owned by Donau-Wasserkraft AG.

            The hydroelectric power plant has a turbine output of 164 MW and a pump output of 154 megawatts with its two Francis pump turbines. The upper reservoir is located about 300 meters above the lower reservoir and is connected to it by a tunnel about 1.3 km long. The maximum head is 320 m. The upper reservoir has a capacity of about 1.5 million m³. The maximum energy storage capacity is 950 MWh.

            The Langenprozelten pumped storage power plant only supplies traction current and is an important peak load power plant in the traction current network. The grid connection is made to the DB Energie power grid at the 110 kV high-voltage level.

            The body of water dammed in the lower reservoir is the Sindersbach. It usually has no water in the summer. Therefore, when necessary, water is pumped up from another retention basin, which is located 1.2 km below the lower basin.

            Both dams (upper and lower basins) are rockfill dams with an asphalt concrete outer seal.

              However, the path further downhill is very difficult to navigate. It has been rummaged through by wild boars, there are lots of branches all over the place and lots of loose stones. Going up the mountain is a breeze. Going downhill is not much fun.
