From Wilsede two paths lead southwards to the ground of the dead. Once there, you have a great view over the heath and far beyond - absolutely recommendable! Interesting for mountain bikers: From the vantage point, several trails lead down: the Totentrail, the Holzbergtrail and Steingrundtrail. Have fun!

Heathland - as far as the eye can see!
In this basin, probably formed during the glacial period, 1 km south of Wilsede, impressively distinctive juniper bushes and heather grow. The name "Totengrund" probably comes from the barren (dead) soil.
To protect the valuable heathland, the Totengrund itself is off-limits. From the viewpoint, you have a wonderful view. Several cycling and hiking trails and great mountain bike trails lead around the Totengrund.

The mystical valley in the middle of the nature reserve. Is it haunted here? No, what sounds so mystical is actually one of the most beautiful heath areas ever. When the heather blooms here in August, you have a wonderful view of the sea of flowers from the edges of the valley.
But the Totengrund is not only a dream when the heather is in bloom. Even in spring, when nature awakens, the Totengrund is a worthwhile destination. Lovers particularly appreciate the Totengrund in winter or when it is foggy, as this is when the mystical image appears.
As early as 1906, the heath pastor Wilhelm Bode saved the Totengrund from planned construction work and thus sealed the creation of the first nature reserve in Germany. In 1921 the heath area was placed under nature protection. Today the Totengrund is one of the most beautiful heath areas in the entire Lüneburg Heath.
