Fukuyama Castle is located on a hill directly opposite Fukuyama Railway Station. It is ideal for a small stopover. Get out of the train, into the castle and the journey can continue.
The castle, built in 1622, was one of the last to be completed in the Edo period. It served as a base for the protection of western Japan. It was abandoned and its buildings demolished in 1873 after the Meiji restoration. The ruins were further destroyed by the air raids during World War II. The present main castle dates back to 1966 and was rebuilt in reinforced concrete, as are many castles in Japan.
