Grand-Fort-Philippe (Dutch: Groot-Fort-Filips) is a commune in the French Northern Department, arrondissement of Dunkirk, on the Opal Coast at the mouth of the River Aa. The municipality is located on the border of French Flanders and Artesia. It has about 5400 inhabitants.
Grand-Fort-Philippe is located on the west bank of the canalized Aa, where it flows into the North Sea. On the left bank is the village of Petit-Fort-Philippe, which is part of the municipality of Grevelingen. In 1582, Philip II, Count of Flanders, established a fortress here which, together with the fort in Petit-Fort-Philippe, provides access to the Aa had to defend against France. In 1657 the fortresses were destroyed by the troops of Turenne. In 1659 the place came into the hands of France. In 1811 it became an official base for the smoogleurs or smugglers where, despite the continental system imposed by Napoleon, English and American ships came to sell their merchandise.
In 1883 Grand-Fort-Philippe became an independent municipality, which separated from the municipality of Grevelingen. In the past it was mainly an important fishing port.
