The Kintaikyo Bridge has been the landmark of Iwakuni for centuries. The elegant wooden bridge crosses the Nishiki River with five bold arches on massive stone pillars.
The bridge was completed in 1673. In 1950, Iwakuni was hit by a violent typhoon and the bridge was destroyed. Shortly thereafter, the construction of a precise reconstruction of the bridge began. It was completed in 1953 and extensively restored in 2000.
