Great castle ruins with sunny snack tables to take a break. Below the castle ruins there is another small cave.

It's a great idea to make a detour to the Wildenfels ruins; the entire complex is well worth seeing and well-maintained, and there's seating available, making it an ideal place for a break.

Located around 2 km north of Großengsee, the Wildenfels castle ruins rise on a wooded height.
At the end of the 13th century, Dietrich von Wildenstein had Wildenfels Castle built. He comes from the important Wildensteiner family, who went down in history as loyalists and advisers to Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria.
Nevertheless, Wildenfels was a notorious predatory nest in the 14th century. Hans von Wildenstein, who was in the service of the Duke of Bavaria, got bogged down in several feuds.
In 1356, an overwhelming debt burden triggered a fiefdom contract for the castle from Emperor Charles IV. Wildenfels remained in the hands of the Wildenstein family for several generations.
In 1509 they sold the entire property to Konrad and Friedrich Pelck. Neither showed any great interest and sold the castle to the imperial city of Nuremberg after only two years. A land maintenance office was set up on the fortification. In 1553 Wildenfels fell victim to the flames when Margrave Alcibiades of Brandenburg was at war with Nuremberg.
The castle was not rebuilt and fell into disrepair.

According to current knowledge, the castle Wildenfels, perhaps instead of a predecessor building, was built between 1290 and 1300 by the lords of Wildenstein, who had their eponymous headquarters at Dietfurt an der Altmühl. For the first time in 1323, Dietrich von Wildenstein called himself Wildenfels after the castle.

The village of Wildenfels is located on a southern slope of the Alb plateau below the castle ruins at 516 m (state road) or 586 m (castle ruins) above sea level.

Wildenfels Castle, daughter castle of Wildenstein in the Altmühltal, was built between 1317 and 1323. The builder of the castle, Dietrich III. von Wildenstein, is mentioned in 1313 and has been called Dietrich Wildensteiner von Wildenfels after his castle since 1323.

The castle has been in ruins since 1553 (2nd Margrave War), and the seat of the nursing office was moved to Hiltpoltstein in 1610/14.

Beautifully restored castle ruins. Absolutely visit.
Praiseworthy that the Bayr. State Forests here have something positive and beautiful than the xte wetland with high costs from their profits have caused. It's a pity, sustainability is not so far off. Throughout the ruin, bushes and trees begin to spread, the bower as nursery. From the upper castle (summer 2018) there is no distant view (more?), Because the huge trees on the slope everything wrong. Not even to the opposite ray rock there is eye contact.
Exposures and hungry goats need our rocky slopes and ruins! :))

A very beautiful castle ruin above the small, pretty town. In winter you can see Hohenfels Castle through the trees.

Interesting and restored castle ruins. The climb is worth it! Be careful when using the wooden railings! Are sometimes very shaky!

In 1525 the castle was completely destroyed during the Peasants' War. After the people of Nuremberg had rebuilt it, it was destroyed again in 1553 by Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades during the Second Margrave War and was not rebuilt afterwards.

In 1827 the western half of the keep, which had been largely intact until then, collapsed after a lightning strike. The first measures to secure the building structure were taken in 1913, and the ruins were completely renovated in 2013/2014. Remnants of the walls of the palace, the keep, other buildings and the surrounding walls still remain.

Today the ruins are protected as a landscape-defining architectural monument D-5-74-158-80 "Castle ruins, significant remains of the keep and adjoining buildings, limestone blocks and limestone quarry stone, 13th-15th century. Century”, as well as archaeological monument D-5-6334-0016 “Medieval and early modern findings in the area of the Wildenstein castle ruins” recorded by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.
