    The Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey, founded in the year 1001 by a Count of Cerdagne, is located in the heart of the Canigou massif, on a 1,094 meter high rocky outcrop over the Cady valley.

    This oasis of peace is nestled in beautiful, peaceful and green surroundings, and can only be reached on foot from the village of Casteil, after a climb of approximately 40 minutes.

                  The best way to view the monastery complex is from the vantage point slightly above. At the monastery there are toilets, ice cream, a coffee machine and a souvenir shop. The monastery itself can only be visited from the inside with a guided tour in French.
