A beautiful city - as soon as you have left the city ring road (it's generally good to cycle here, many cycle paths) you get to a small inner city that is typically Franconian

The beginnings of Hilpoltstein Castle and the town date back to the 10th century. In the 13th and 14th centuries the castle was the seat of the Lords of Stein. In 1354 Hilpoltstein was granted city rights. Two years later, Schweiger von Gundelfingen sold the castle and town of Hilpoltstein to the Wittelsbach dukes Stephan, Johann and Friedrich. When the duchy was divided, Hilpoltstein became part of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. In 1392 Duke Stephan confirmed the city rights.

Hilpoltstein is a town in the district of Roth in central Franconia and is located about 30 kilometers south of Nuremberg near the Rothsee. Heinrich von Stein and his son Hilpolt I, of the von Herren family, are considered to be the actual founders of the “oppidum in Lapide” around 1280.
