Very well-kept complex around one of the oldest buildings in Germany. The Lorsch Monastery dates back to the time of Charlemagne and has also been immortalized on postage stamps. Opposite is the pedestrian zone in Lorsch city center.

Coming from the old town hall on the market square, one first sees the architectural highlight of the UNESCO World Heritage: The picturesque Königshalle with the world-famous colorful sandstone facade is one of the few well-preserved buildings from the Carolingian era. Although their purpose is still unclear, their importance is undisputed. However, the entire monastery area has much more to offer, so it really pays to walk a few steps. THE MONASTERY

The history of the monastery began in 764. Gaugraf Cancor and his mother Williswinda gave an estate on the Weschnitz to their relative, Bishop Chrodegang of Metz, who settled the settlement with monks from Gorze.

With the arrival of the relics of Saint Nazarius in 765, the abbey began an unprecedented rise. The monastery soon became very wealthy through numerous donations and was distinguished by royal favors.

The rapid growth of the abbey required an early relocation; where the remains of the former monastery can still be seen today, such as the King's Hall, the landmark of Carolingian architectural culture.

How great the reputation of this imperial monastery was just ten years after its founding is shown by the presence of high spiritual and secular dignitaries who were present at the consecration of the new monastery basilica on September 1, 774, including Charlemagne.
