Kokura Castle has been well restored and has become a landmark of Kitakyushu, with the only standing keep in Fukuoka Prefecture. The castle is bordered on two sides by a moat and on the other two by the extensive castle grounds, which together form Katsuyama Park. The park is home to hundreds of cherry trees, which give the castle a special charm in April during the cherry blossom season.

The ruins of Fukuoka Castle are located in the middle of the city in Maizuru Park. During the Edo period (1603-1867), Fukuoka Castle was the largest castle on Kyushu. However, it was almost completely demolished after the Meiji Restoration as an unwanted symbol of the feudal past. Today only foundations and towers are preserved.
