The Heimathaus is the former town hall of Borghorst and was designed and built in 1887 by the Münster architect Anton Nordhoff. With its two wings, it offers an impressive and harmonious use of the corner plot. The solution with the two isosceles wings offered itself for the situation at that time, because the building was initially built and used as a post office half and the other as an office building. The patriotism of the early years was reflected in the architectural design of the building, since the floor plan was designed in the shape of the Prussian imperial eagle. This gave the Borghorst community something special, because it seems that there is no parallel to this idea anywhere in Germany.

Another special feature of the building is the tower with its baroque, copper-covered hood. It is the fairly faithful replica of the tower hood of the old collegiate church. At the time of planning the town hall, the old collegiate church was demolished to make way for a new, large, neo-Gothic church building. Since the demolition was not without controversy at the time, the Borghorster tried to preserve at least part of their memory of the old abbey and the church in this way.

For the rest, the building, with its stepped gables with a shell attachment and the gabled portal, is based on elements of the Renaissance architecture.

After the merging of the towns of Borghorst and Burgsteinfurt into the new town of Steinfurt, the administration of the town was housed in six different buildings. The construction of the new town hall was started. After completion, the old town hall of Borghorst passed into the possession of the local association in 1982. The home was set up with enormous enthusiasm and the energy of its numerous members. Since its inception, this home house has become a meeting place.
