History The Tranekær Castle is owned by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family and the oldest inhabited building in Denmark. In summer, the castle opens its doors at the end of July for tours in Danish. Originally, Tranekær Castle was a heavily fortified castle with a moat and drawbridge, dating back to the 13th century. The current form is due to Landgrave Ahlefeldt-Laurvig, who had the manorial complex extensively renovated between 1859 and 1865. Around 1950, the palace received its distinctive facade painted in English red. A visit is only possible on a few fixed dates in the year. You can stop off at the “Generalen” restaurant directly below the castle.
