In addition, the Rheine forest hill has meanwhile become an important biotope. Almost 1000 plant species are found on the site, over 50 of which are endangered. This makes the forest hill one of the most species-rich natural landscapes in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Lime pits (Klippkuhlen) were built on the forest hill as early as the Middle Ages. Industrial dismantling began in the 19th century. The traces of the massive intervention are still on the ground monument today

The rare and protected plant community emerged after deforestation and subsequent grazing on semi-dry limestone grassland and is extremely species-rich. Characteristic are orchids and plants such as orchid, cowslip, wild thyme, wild carrot, golden thistle, grouse, hawthorn and blackthorn.
