Proskinitaria in Greece ...

the small churches on the roadside or other special places.

They stand on every street, in fields, in the mountains, even on factory grounds. Originally, they served people to pray during the day. Above all, therefore, farmers set up on the edge of their fields such small churches, which are called in Greece Proskinitária. Inside, there is an oil lamp, usually a small image of a saint and some bottles of oil for the operation of the eternal flame.

In modern times, a new purpose for the small places of worship was added: they were erected when someone died on the street in an accident. However, they will also be donated if the person survived an accident. In view of stable high numbers of accidents in Greece, the country roads fill more and more with the small church. The imagination knows no bounds when it comes to design.
