Planica (also the valley below Ponce) is a glacial valley in the northwestern part of the Julian Alps. It stretches from the settlement of Rateče to the mountain lodge, Dom v Tamarju, and from there the valley continues under the name Tamar. Planica is bounded on the west by the Ponc mountain range (the highest peak is Visoka Ponca with 2274 m), on the east by Ciprnik (1745 m) and Sleme (1815 m), and on the south side (in Tamar) by Mojstrovka (2366 m), Travnik (2379 m). ) and Jalovec (2645 m).
The valley is best known for its ski jumps. Planica also has the largest airfield in the world, which is traditionally the last in line every year. The first competitions in ski jumping or. flights took place here as early as the 1930s. Many world records in the length of ski flights were set on Rožman's (1934) and later Bloudek's ski jump, among other things, in 1936 the 100-meter mark was exceeded for the first time. In 1969, the construction of the Gorišek brothers' airfield followed, on which it was possible to achieve new and new record distances with gradual improvements. In 1994, for the first time, another magical limit was exceeded - 200 meters.
