The approximately 385 hectare protected area includes the Okerniederung between the district of Wöltingerode (city of Goslar) and the municipality of Schladen, insofar as it is located in Lower Saxony. The meandering, fast flowing, five to ten meter wide river course with gravel banks, flood troughs and old water is characteristic of the area's still natural character.

The valley vegetation that accompanies the river shows a mosaic of floodplain forests, gravel fields rich in perennials and flowers and river gravel-poor grasslands influenced by heavy metals. The distinctive central terrace edge is populated with dry shrubbery and deciduous trees such as oak, ash, cherry, hazelnut and mountain ash and limits the area in the west to a length of about five kilometers. Gravel ponds, such as the renatured Wiedelaher See, which is now entirely in the NSG, are particularly important as a breeding and resting area for water birds and as a habitat for amphibians.

The southern part of the Eckertal is characterized on long sections by well-trained regional and site-typical forest stands (alder-ash forest of the meadows, species-rich beech and oak-hornbeam forest with valuable old wood stock). In the northern part of the Eckeraue, the current landscape is predominantly an intensively used cultural landscape. But in this area too - as for almost the entire length - the Ecker has a natural, meandering run with a gravelly, gravelly, mostly flat water bed.

The Ecker is from the south to Lochtum and the Oker north of Wiedelah is part of the “Green Belt Germany” in the area of the former inner German border.
