Großer Woog (1567) – Darmstadt 🚴‍♂️

The Großer Woog is a natural bathing lake on the eastern edge of Darmstadt's city center. The 5.7-hectare body of water, with an average depth of 1.8 m and a maximum depth of 3.36 m, was created by the Landgraves in 1567, along with the Kleiner Woog, as a firefighting pond and amusement water park. It is fed by the Darmbach stream, which runs through Darmstadt. The water is somewhat murky due to its geological composition. The Kleiner Woog was filled in 1888 and is now the Woogsplatz (Woog Square). Since around 1820, the Großer Woog has been used as a bathing lake with two bathing areas and an island. In 1926/1927, a women's bathing area in the Expressionist architectural style was built to replace a previous building, designed by the city architect August Buxbaum. The facility was expanded in 1935 with the addition of a ten-meter diving platform and concrete walkways. From 1992 to 1994, the dilapidated former women's pool was demolished and reconstructed as a "family pool" according to the original plans. The entire complex, including the island, the competition lanes, the diving platform, the family pool, and the Woogsdamm with its attendant's house, is a listed building. 🚴‍♂️

Beautiful lake. In summer you can cool off here for the necessary change. Within the bathing area there are sanitary facilities with showers and a kiosk for the small appetite. There is a lot going on here on weekends and when the weather is good.
