The Elbe Cycle Path runs here directly on the Elbe dike. There is a ferry connection from Bitter to Hitzacker, which is opposite, on the other side of the Elbe. The ferry is only for cyclists and pedestrians, there is no ferry service here in the winter months.

Located directly across from Hitzacker, Bitter is the ferry terminal for the passenger and freight ferry and is part of the municipality of Amt Neuhaus. The area of the municipality lies in the glacial valley of the Elbe north of the Elbhöhen-Wendland nature park and itself belongs entirely to the Lower Saxony Elbtalaue biosphere reserve.
