      The buildings whose ruins survive here may have developed over a period of almost 1,000 years, between about 800 and 700 BC. The Broch Tower was built sometime between 400 and 100 BC. Scholars still debate whether it was a prestigious estate, a fortified fortress or both - the evidence is inconclusive.

      After a few centuries the height of the broch was reduced and rebuilt inside. The occupants of this later building were notable figures who enjoyed imported luxury - fragments of a decorated Roman glass bowl have been found here.

      SECRETS OF CLICKIMIN

      The purpose of the two-storey outwork is unknown. It could be a standalone guardhouse or defensive structure connected to the broch, a remnant of an earlier fortress or perhaps a site of ritual conflict.

          On the shores of Lake Clickimin stands an excellent example of a broch, a sophisticated round stone house found only in Scotland. Clickimin Broch is known to have been inhabited for a thousand years. The tower still impresses with its considerable height, and the whole complex is surrounded by a fortress wall. Within the wall stands the enigmatic blockhouse and to the west of the broch are a number of remains of former settlements dating back to 1000 BC. to 500 AD
