        "If you want to see your enemies in time, you have to go high up. So the Romans built a large fort on the mountain above Bernkastel-Kues and gave it the name “Princastellum”. It was so famous that early medieval manuscripts still tell of it! And now you know also where the city got its name: As part of a long fortification belt, the bulwark was intended to protect the Moselle valley from the barbarians.
        It didn't help. Under the Frankish conquerors, the fortress became a castle, and the castle suffered the fate of all castles: it was besieged, conquered, rebuilt and became a bone of contention in power-political intrigues. It survived the French invasion, but then - quite ingloriously - fell victim to a major fire. Today the castle ruins are a really nice excursion destination with a vivid themed circular route. It can be reached on foot in about half an hour from the historic market square. Of course there is also a road leading up. Or just take the Burg-Landshut Express."
