The Kopfkraxen is a grass mountain upstream or downstream of the Sonneck (view), which also measures an impressive 2180m - however, a real summit cross is missing here. A pile of stones marks the highest point.
If you tackle the Kopfkraxen from the Sonneck, a short, rope-insured section has to be mastered - if you have made it this far, you shouldn't have any problems with this piece either. You should plan at least 15 minutes (up to half an hour) for the walk from the Sonneck to the Kopfkraxen.
Coming from the other side, the last ascent to Kopfkraxen runs over a long, sometimes steep mountain ridge to the summit. Here you start, for example, near Scheffau from the Kaiser-Hochalm (past the Sonnenstein), or (only for trained and experienced hikers and mountaineers) you venture via Scheffauer over the Hackenköpf and the Wiesberg to the Kopfkraxen (the weather is stable for this tightrope walk absolutely necessary).
Take enough liquid with you for the tour to the head scrambler, as no water can be refilled over a longer period of time. The ascent requires good physical condition and surefootedness, and a head for heights is also an advantage.
A nice "sidekick" on the way to the Sonneck, which you should definitely take with you if you have enough time and fitness. The mountain rewards the hiker with a wonderful view towards Hintersteinersee and Scheffauer, towards Inntal, Hohe Tauern, Zahmer Kaiser and back to Sonneck, Treffauer and Tuxeck.
