The Verdronken Zwarte Polder is a so-called slufter, an area behind a row of dunes that has broken through and was created in 1802. In fact, however, this area was created by a dike breach, which flooded the Zwarte Polder of 120 hectares. It concerned a constructed dike in which a modest row of dunes spontaneously developed. This dammed up the remaining part of the Black Hole. Since then, the area has only been partially reclaimed. In 1803 an area of 8 hectares was re-diked, today known as Zwarte Polder.

The drowned Zwarte Polder near Nieuwvliet-Bad is a polder that was reclaimed from the sea in 1623 and diked in and reclaimed in 1802 by the North Sea in a large storm surge: The dike broke down and the resulting hole flooded the land. Over the past four centuries, the permanent ebb and flow and the constant inflow and outflow of salty seawater have created a typical natural environment.
