The Peterberg Chapel (Peterkapelle) on the Peterberg in Saarland was built in the 13th century as a wooden chapel on the site of a sacrificial altar and was first documented in 1539. In 1975, a community of interest formed, which completed the construction of a new building in 1982. Even in pre-Christian times, the Peterberg was considered a weather hill where cult, worship, and sacrificial rituals took place. In 1975, the then pastor of Kastel, Hermann Spang, excavated a millstone (runner) from a hand mill near the chapel (on display in the Wadern Local History Museum). Various ceramic fragments from different eras can also be found in the fields surrounding the Chapel Hill (also the field name, dialectally: Kapellehiwwel). Even after Christianization, the hill was believed to be the seat of weather witches, responsible for storms and crop failures:

The Peterberg Chapel was dedicated to Saint Peter. Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when he, along with his brother, was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men." According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two-millennia-long line of popes—currently Francis—follows his succession. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted holding two keys. This attribute refers to the biblical passage in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, verse 19). Peter, along with Paul, is also known as the "Prince of the Apostles." Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29.
