In June 1915, the Vienna War Ministry decided that a prisoner of war camp should be built in Sigmundsherberg. The camp's capacity was designed for 20,000 soldiers and 200 officers. Today, the camp cemetery, which was specially built for this purpose, still reminds us of this time.

The prisoner of war camp Sigmundsherberg was one of the largest prisoner of war camps of the Danube monarchy during the First World War.
The first nine deceased prisoners were buried in the local cemeteries of Rodingersdorf and Maigen near Sigmundsherberg. For all others, the specially built camp cemetery was already available. According to the memorial stone, more than 2,400 soldiers (of whom 2,363 were Italians) were buried on the graveyard, which is now off the route of the Kaiser Franz Joseph Railway. In addition, other numbers circulate, in about the same order of magnitude.
