A small, romantic gorge forms the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. The ferry boats are moved by the ferrymen by hand and oars silently. They also tell something about history and nature. The route is almost 700 meters long and takes a good half hour on the water. You can then continue hiking or return by boat. It takes about 45 minutes to walk from the signposted car park. A great hike!

The boat ride on the upper lock has been around since 1879. You can ride in both directions. The boat trip starts at the boat station. In summer it happens that you have to wait a bit. At the boat station there is a small snack to shorten the waiting time. The boat ride is almost a kilometer long and ends at the dam wall.
The barrage in the Kirnitzsch used to provide water for rafting. In the 1960s, people said goodbye to rafting and the upper lock was only used for boat trips. Until the beginning of the 1990s, the lowering was used in autumn to make the Kirnitzsch a little wilder and to go kayaking on it. By draining, the sand deposits were washed away from the dammed area and there was always enough depth for the barges. Since the founding of the national park, this is no longer allowed and the boat trip is increasingly faced with the problem of silting up at the boat station.

The upper lock is a popular but not overcrowded hiking area with breathtaking rocks on the German and Czech side.
Starting point for many exciting hikes, such as to the Hermannseck, to the Rabensteinen or to the Weißbachtal.

Super tour in absolute silence with great stories from the boat guide.
Small insider tip: We did the tour the other way round and were alone on the barge. This saved us 1.5 hours of waiting time at the starting point on Easter Sunday. It is always extremely crowded on public holidays or other special days.

The boat trip is an alternative to the hiking trail in the Kirnitzschklamm. The offer can be used from Easter to October 31st. It runs daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (last boat trip at 4 p.m.). Children up to the age of 16 pay 5 euros, later 7 euros. One child up to the age of 6 can travel free of charge when accompanied by a paying adult. The boat trip is also offered during the corona pandemic.
During the trip you learn a lot about the lock, the rocks and the animal and plant world. High sandstone cliffs tower up on both sides of the Kirnitzsch. At the southern exit there is a roaring waterfall, where the dammed Kirnitzsch flows back into its natural riverbed. Steep stone steps lead hikers back to the main hiking trail.
