From the intersection in Dessel the canal runs via Turnhout to Schoten, this waterway has a length of 64 kilometers.
The height difference between Dessel and Schoten is 25.70 meters and is overcome by 10 lock complexes, all located on the Turnhout-Schoten route.
In addition to the Albert Canal and the Bocholt-Herentals Canal, the canal is connected to the Dessel-Kwaadmechelen Canal, which is an extension of it and through which it is also connected to the Albert Canal on the east side.

The Kempisch Canal was dug in the period 1844 - 1846. Inland shipping penetrated into the Noorderkempen. Along the bank where we now walk or cycle recreationally, a strip used to be provided for ship hunting. This heavy work was performed by humans or animals. The perfect combination was horse and donkey. To make the hard work more bearable, trees were planted to provide shadow strips above the 'Jaagpad'.
We can take advantage of this shady ribbon today...

The Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten Canal is a canal in the Belgian province of Antwerp. It connects the Bocholt-Herentals Canal in Dessel with the Albert Canal in Schoten. It is one of the seven Kempen canals between the Maas and the Scheldt.
