Peter Wessel Tordenskiold was a Danish-Norwegian naval officer during the Great Northern War. His daring and skill brought him successes in several naval battles against the Swedish fleet and helped him to rise quickly and in 1716 to a title of nobility.

Peter Wessel Tordenskiold born Peter Jansen Wessel (7 November 1690-12 November 1720) was a Danish-Norwegian naval officer during the Great Northern War.
When he was ennobled in 1716, he was given the name "Tordenskiold", which means thunder shield.
Shortly after the end of the war, he died in a duel against a Swedish officer.
