The church of St. Johannis in the Baltic Sea resort of Rerik stands out from afar thanks to its red church tower. This conspicuousness is intentional, as this church is an important landmark for fishermen and boatmen.

The church was built in the middle of the 13th century and is one of the best examples of the early Gothic architectural style in the coastal area.

The parish church in the center of Rerik was built between 1250 and 1270. According to tradition, a Danish queen founded the church. She got into distress off the coast and was rescued by Reriker fishermen. The square church tower with its eight-sided roof, also known as the bishop's cap, was once an important landmark. The early Gothic St. Johannes Church in Rerik had a special function for centuries: With its square tower, the eight-sided helmet called "Bischofsmütze" and the baroque design, which is unique in northern Germany, it represented a landmark for boaters and fishermen.

The parish church was built between 1250 and 1270. According to an old tradition, a Danish queen is said to have donated the church out of gratitude when she got into distress and was rescued by fishermen from Alt Gaarz.
