              The double complex, consisting of the former prince-bishop's residence (until 1673) and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Clemens (until 1803), was founded in the 11th century by Bishop Benno II of Osnabrück (1068 - 1088). The richly furnished Knight's Hall (17th century), which has been preserved to this day, is an excellent example of perspective-painted mock architecture, and is now considered the last surviving example north of the Alps. Sophie Charlotte, who later became the first Queen of Prussia and grandmother of Frederick the Great, was born in Iburg Castle in 1668. Guided tours: Fri - Sun 3 p.m., special dates for groups (max. 30 people) by arrangement. The Knight's Hall is open from May to October, Mon - Thu 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. The newly designed museum was reopened at the end of 2002 with the exhibition "Fortification, Bishop's Residence, Monastery - archaeological research on the 1200 year old Iburg". Finds on the history of the unusual double structure of castle and monastery are presented.
