The first church in Kuckum is mentioned in 1535. This was a small shrine. In 1794, this was replaced by the Kreuzkapelle, a foundation of the Martin Schüller couple. This half-timbered building was demolished in 1891. As early as 1888, a chapel building association was founded to finance a new church. On October 13, 1889, the Cologne General Vicariate granted ecclesiastical building permission. On June 29, 1890, the foundation stone for the new church was finally laid. The building is a neo-Gothic hall church with a choir closed on three sides. From 1925 to 1926, a sacristy was added according to plans by Eduard Endler.
The church has belonged to the large parish of Christkönig Erkelenz since January 1, 2015. The Kuckum parish was dissolved in 2010 and added to the parish of St. Maria and Elisabeth Erkelenz, which was newly founded in 2010. This merged with the parish of St. Lambertus Erkelenz on January 1, 2015 to form the parish of Christ the King.
With effect from November 28, 2021, the Sacred Heart Church was desecrated without the usual last service. The believers had the opportunity to say goodbye to the church the day before.
