      The name of the Pfaffenbach is derived from the Heisterbach monks (priests), who had some estates in Neustadt an der Wied from the middle of the 13th to the end of the 18th century as well as pastoral work in the parish there. In 1254, Countess Mechthild von Sayn donated the church in Neustadt with patronage and tithes as well as the tithes from her farms and estates in the parish of Neustadt to the hospital of Heisterbach Abbey.[5] The monks' path from Heisterbach to Neustadt led along the Pfaffenbach. A bridge over the Pfaffenbach between the villages of Hüngsberg (district of Windhagen) and Prangenberg (district of Neustadt (Wied)) bears the name "Pfaffensteg".
