Schildhorn is a promontory in the conservation area Grunewald in Berlin Grunewald district of the district Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The approximately 110-meter wide peninsula protrudes about 400 meters into the Havel and forms a small bay, the Jürgenlanke.
The Schildhorn, the Jürgenlanke and the listed ensemble Wirtshaus Schildhorn were in the 1880s as the favorite destination of the Berlin Sunday trippers. The decline in excursion gastronomy after the Second World War led to a loss of functionality and attractiveness of the area, which the Berlin Senate was able to absorb only partially despite targeted countermeasures.
The attraction of the visitors is, in addition to the Havel landscape and gastronomy, the Schildhorn monument, designed by Friedrich August Stüler after pencil drawings by Frederick William IV of Prussia in 1845. The monument belonged to a sculptural group of three, with which the king wanted to mark in the "often deadly uninteresting areas" of the Mark Brandenburg turning points of the national history. It still exists, but has largely been forgotten. The column also called "Schildhornkreuz" symbolizes the Schildhornsage from the 19th century to the Slavic prince Jaxa von Köpenick, who is said to have fled here in 1157 in the founding year of Mark Brandenburg before Albrecht the Bear through the Havel. Out of gratitude for his salvation, Jaxa professed Christianity and hung his shield and horn on a tree. Since then, the headland is called Schildhorn.
