Maccagno is a small town of 2,000 inhabitants located on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Varese. The history of Maccagno dates back to medieval times. Maccagno still occupies an important geographical position as the road starts from here which, passing through the Neggia Alp, arrives in Gambarogno, in Switzerland.

Maccagno: History
Maccagno can look back on an ancient and somewhat original history. In 962, Otto I landed in what was then a small fishing and craftsman's village, which was under the control of Count Mandelli. He found refuge there and enjoyed the hospitality. As a sign of his gratitude, he granted the village independence from feudal rule and the right to mint coins. Maccagno became a dwarf state surrounded by vassals. This autonomy lasted for centuries until the reign of the Borromeans. The humanist Domenico Della Bella, known as "il Macaneo", can be counted among the famous citizens of Maccagno.

Maccagno: Sights
Until a few decades ago, the settlement was divided into Inferiore and Superiore (upper Maccagno and lower Maccagno) by the Giona river: the two villages had an independent administration; Even today, the material difference in urban structure is significant. Characteristic is the Contrada Maggiore, the ancient city center of the town, with narrow streets and houses scattered next to each other. The Torre Imperiale (Imperial Tower) and the small sanctuary of the Madonnina della Punta (sec. XVI), supported by mighty archways and overlooking the lake as if on a balcony, dominate the village. From here you can see the Castelli di Cannero (Cannero Castle), located on a small island not far from the Piedmontese shore.
In the upper part of Maccagno superiore, which is a little more modern, is the town hall. Worth mentioning is Casa Branca with its inner courtyard and arcades. What is so enchanting about Maccagno, however, is the breathtaking panorama over the entire Verbano: from the hills of the Canton of Ticino to the Borromean Gulf. The beach formed by the Giona River is unrivaled anywhere else in terms of length and width: it is a particularly outstanding place among the splendid tourist centers of Lake Maggiore. To enjoy all these splendors, thousands of tourists come to Maccagno every year; You will find accommodation in various hotels, two well-equipped campsites and various holiday apartments.
In 1979, the Civico Museo Parisi Valle (Citizens' Museum) was founded by creating a structure bridging the Giona. This houses the collection of modern art, which was donated by its founder Giuseppe Vittorio Parisi. The regular events also include “risotto con luganega”, which you can enjoy at every carnival. The municipality has recently used a multi-purpose hall, the Parco delle Feste, for events and municipal events.
