Dead bodies of two camps were buried at this tomb during the Second World War:
In the whole right-hand side of the square in the mass graves of hundreds of Soviet prisoners of war who perished in a Wehrmacht camp in the fall of 1941.

After the war ended, the camp barracks were initially used as refugee accommodation. In the early 1970s, all the buildings were demolished.
The "grave site for prisoners of war and concentration camp victims Moorkaten" is located on the grounds of the Bundeswehr training area in Kaltenkirchen.
After the city of Kaltenkirchen decided in 1977 to make this place more appropriate, the cemetery was opened in its current design a year later. This was made possible primarily through the work of two international youth camps run by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge.
