To reach Buttermilk Falls, park at the Standing Cedars kiosk on 55th Avenue in Osceola and follow the Buffalo Skull Loop Trail for about 0.4 miles to an unmarked junction, then take the spur to the falls. The round-trip hike is about 1 to 1.3 miles, mostly on easy terrain. However, the final approach offers two options: viewing from above along a narrow rock outcrop, or descending a moderately steep path to the base, which is safest when dry. The falls, formed by spring-fed Buttermilk Creek, drop 40 feet into the forested riverway. The surrounding area includes oak savanna, cliffs, prairies, and woodlands—ideal for hiking, birding, and nature exploration, with bikes and pets restricted.
