At the heart of a diverse mountain landscape, the 1,141-meter-high Brocken towers as the highest point of the Harz National Park. The Brocken is the highest mountain in Northern Germany, a site of extreme weather, and the only low mountain range in Germany with a natural tree line. Unique relics of the Ice Age have survived in the barren mountain heaths, rocks, and moors of the Brocken. Plants and animals that otherwise only occur in cool climates are at home here.

Some love it, some don't. If you want to enjoy the peace and quiet, you should go up either very early before the first cable car or late after the last one departs. Whether by bike or on foot, I like my local mountain. And in good weather, the views are beautiful. But the fog is also beautiful. It makes it seem mystical.

The highest peak in Northern Germany is a true classic – and always a worthwhile destination, even when it's busy. Whether by bike or on foot, the final climb is challenging, but the summit rewards you with a sweeping panoramic view across the Harz Mountains. Once at the top, take your time to stroll across the plateau and soak up the typical rugged Brocken atmosphere. It's best to start early to avoid the biggest crowds. If the weather is changeable, be sure to pack windproof clothing – it can get chilly up here, even in summer.
